Stepper, climber, or stair climber: which one suits you?

With these machines, your ceiling height matters more than your floor space. There are three types:

  • Stepper (€ 1,595). You step up and down on pedals, combined with an elliptical trainer movement. Compact and primarily for your lower body. For example, the Sole SC200.
  • Climber (€ 2,595). A climbing movement that also engages the arms and core. Built vertically, so it requires little floor space. For example, the Sole CC81.
  • Stair climber with rotating steps (€ 5,995 to € 8,995). You continuously climb stairs on rotating steps. This comes closest to real stair climbing, but it is tall, heavy and expensive. For example, the DKN SC Pro or the Spirit CSC980.

You can test all models in our showroom in Ranst, so you can also measure your height on the highest step.

What should you look out for?

Ceiling height

Count on your own height plus the height of the step you are standing on, with a margin. For the Spirit CSC980, Spirit specifies a minimum ceiling height of 2.4 m. Measure the clearance to the lowest beam, pipe, or lamp, not to the ceiling next to it.

Access to your room

The DKN SC Pro measures 185 x 79 cm on the floor and is 211 cm high. Measure your doors, stairs, and turning points in advance.

Steps and pace

Large steps provide a secure footing at a high pace. On the SC Pro, they are 50 cm wide, 24.5 cm deep, and 18 cm high; on the CSC980, they are 28 x 47 cm with a 21 cm side step for easy mounting and dismounting.

Safety

The SC Pro features a triple emergency stop with an infrared sensor and a sensor at the mounting area. The CSC900 features anti-trap steps and locks when not in use. The CSC980 activates a mechanical brake if a user falls.

Showroom tip: stand on a step and have someone measure the distance from the floor to the top of your head. Add a margin, because at a high pace you also move up and down.

Which stair climber for whom?

  • Home: a stepper or climber is usually the realistic choice: requiring little floor space and less than half the price of a stair climber. If you have the height and really want to climb stairs, the SC Pro fits in a serious home gym. Also check out our home gym page.
  • PT studio: a stair climber suits short, intensive blocks in a circuit. More on fitness equipment for personal trainers.
  • Hotel and corporate gym: choose a Spirit CSC980 or CSC900, built for commercial spaces and featuring safety functions for unsupervised training. See hotel fitness equipment and renting and leasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a stepper and a stair climber?

A stepper has two pedals that move up and down, while a stair climber has rotating steps that allow you to actually climb stairs. As a result, a stair climber is taller, heavier, and more expensive.

Which muscles do you train on a stair climber?

You mainly train your quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings while building your cardiovascular endurance at the same time.

Is a stair climber good for your knees?

There is no landing impact like running, because your feet stay on the steps. However, your knees do bend with every step under your body weight: if you have knee issues, consult your physiotherapist first and start at a low pace.

Does a stair climber make a lot of noise on an upper floor?

The drive mechanism is usually quiet, but your steps transmit impact noise through the floor. A subfloor made of rubber tiles reduces these vibrations, and for a heavy machine, it is best to check whether the floor can handle the load.

Do you also install the stair climber?

Yes, our in-house team installs the equipment for € 75 to approximately € 350 depending on the size, including assembly and removal of packaging. Delivery in the Benelux region is free from € 199, and you have a 30-day trial period (more about installation).

What kind of warranty do you get and can I test them first?

Every stair climber, stepper and climber comes with a 2-year warranty. You can test all models in our showroom in Ranst: walk in freely from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, or make an appointment.
