SkiErg, air bike or BikeErg: which one suits you best?

All three operate on air resistance: the harder you pull or pedal, the tougher it gets. The difference lies in the movement:

  • SkiErg (€ 1,040). You pull the handles down from above your head, just like poles in cross-country skiing. Your upper body and core do most of the work. For example, the Concept2 SkiErg.
  • Air bike (€ 995 to € 1,795). You pedal and push-pull simultaneously with moving arms, or you train arms and legs separately. For example, the DKN AB140 or the Spirit AB900+.
  • BikeErg (€ 1,399). Pure cycling movement without arm work. A clutch keeps the flywheel spinning when you stop pedaling, just like on a real bike. You can find the Concept2 BikeErg under rowing machines and ergometers.

What should you look out for?

Height and space for the SkiErg

On the Floor Stand, the SkiErg is 216 cm high and takes up 60 x 127 cm of floor space. You pull the handles down with straight arms from above your head, so choose a spot where you will not hit anything. Do not place it in a pathway, as the handles come right in front of your body when pulled out.

Wall or Floor Stand

Mounted on the wall, the SkiErg is the most compact, even if you hang multiple units side by side. However, the wall must be able to support the pulling forces. You can move it using the separately available Floor Stand with transport wheels.

Drive and load capacity

A belt drive like the one on the AB140 is quiet and sufficient for home use. The AB900+ features a 68.6 cm fan with 9 steel blades and a chain, built for heavy and frequent use. In a box or commercial gym with many different users, the higher user weight capacity matters.

Airflow and noise

An air bike moves a lot of air, and you can hear the fan, getting louder the harder you pedal. The wind guard on the AB900+ limits the airflow towards you. Do not place an air bike directly against a wall and place it on rubber tiles to dampen vibrations.

Which equipment for whom?

  • Home: a wall-mounted SkiErg or an AB140 gives you a fully fledged cardio machine in the corner of the garage, for short, hard sessions of 10 to 20 minutes. See also how to set up a home gym.
  • PT studio: a 1,000 m SkiErg is a standard HYROX event, so your clients train on the same equipment as during the competition. For an air bike in a box, choose the AB900+. More at fitness equipment for personal trainers.
  • Physiotherapy practice: the SkiErg can also be used in a seated position, for example in case of leg limitations. Check out fitness equipment for physiotherapists.
  • Hotel and corporate gym: a supplement to the treadmill, bike, and rower for anyone wanting a short interval session. See tailor-made corporate fitness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a SkiErg train?

A SkiErg mainly targets the lats, shoulders, arms, and core, with support from the legs. It is one of the few cardio machines where your upper body does most of the work.

What is the difference between an air bike and an exercise bike?

An air bike works with air resistance and moving arms, whereas an exercise bike has fixed resistance levels and mainly trains your legs. On an air bike, the resistance increases along with your exertion.

Do you need a power outlet for a SkiErg or air bike?

No. The PM5 monitor of the SkiErg is powered by the machine itself during training, while the console of the AB900+ operates on your pedaling power and 4 AA batteries.

Can I track my workouts in an app?

Yes. With the PM5 and the free ErgData app, you can sync your sessions with the Concept2 Online Logbook, and the AB900+ connects via Bluetooth with training apps.

Do you deliver and install the equipment?

Yes, delivery within the Benelux is free from € 199 and you have a 30-day trial period. Installation by our own team costs € 75 to approximately € 350 per machine, including assembly and removal of packaging (more about installation).

What kind of warranty do you get and can I test them first?

Every SkiErg and air bike comes with a 2-year warranty. You can test all equipment in our showroom in Ranst: drop by freely from Monday to Thursday between 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM, Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, or make an appointment.
