Buying a dumbbell set: tower or rack?

A dumbbell rack takes up less than one square meter and is ideal if you train alone or lightly. A rack is wider, but you can grab the dumbbells faster and with two people at the same time. All our sets are Martech rubber-coated hexagon dumbbells.

What should you look out for?

The heaviest pair you need

For curls and lateral raises, you will stay under 10 kg for a long time. For dumbbell presses, rows, and lunges, you will soon need 20 kg or more per hand. If you have been training for a while, choose a set up to at least 25 kg.

Increments per kilo or per 2.5 kg

In the lighter range, you want to be able to build up per kilo, while above that, increments of 2.5 kg are sufficient. The 1 to 25 kg tower combines both: per kilo up to 10 kg, followed by 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, and 25 kg.

Space and flooring

The two-tier rack is 2.2 m wide and 63 cm deep, so make sure to account for extra clearance to pick up the dumbbells. A complete set places 385 to 675 kg in a small area: always install a rubber sports floor under and in front of the rack, and have the load-bearing capacity checked if placing it on an upper floor.

Why choose hexagon?

Thanks to their hexagonal shape, the dumbbells won't roll away when you put them down. The rubber dampens sound and protects your floor, while the knurled chromed handle ensures a secure grip. Read more in hexagon dumbbells: what are they and what are the benefits?

Which set for whom?

  • At home: the 1 to 25 kg tower. 16 pairs in less than one square meter, enough for almost any workout routine.
  • Beginners and rehabilitation: the 1 to 10 kg tower, with one-kilo increments.
  • PT studio and corporate gym: a 5 to 30 kg or 5 to 40 kg rack, allowing multiple people to train simultaneously. Also check out custom corporate fitness solutions and renting and leasing.
  • Physiotherapy practice: the 1 to 10 kg tower fits right next to a treatment table. Find out more in fitness equipment for physiotherapists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which dumbbell set is right for a home gym?

For most home gyms, the 1 to 25 kg dumbbell tower (€1,250) is the best choice: 16 pairs in less than one square meter. If you mainly train light or are undergoing rehabilitation, the 1 to 10 kg tower (€599) is sufficient.

What total weight do I need as a beginner?

As a beginner, the 1 to 10 kg tower is usually sufficient: 10 pairs, totaling 110 kg. If you already perform presses and rows with more than 10 kg per hand, start with the 1 to 25 kg tower.

Can I upgrade to heavier weights later?

Choose the weight range you will need in two years right away, as we do not sell individual hexagon pairs separately. If you want to stay flexible, a PowerBlock Elite EXP grows with you using expansion kits up to 32 or 41 kg per dumbbell.

Dumbbell set with rack or adjustable dumbbells?

If you are training with multiple people or switching quickly between exercises, choose a set with a rack. If you are training alone and space is limited, adjustable dumbbells starting from € 449 are more compact.

How much space does a dumbbell set take up?

A dumbbell rack fits in less than one square metre. The two-tier rack is 2.2 m wide and 63 cm deep, plus clearance to grab the dumbbells.

Is the rack delivered assembled?

The rack comes in parts and therefore fits through any door. Installation by our own team costs € 75 to approximately € 350 per device, including packaging removal. Martech comes with a 3-year warranty, and a lifetime warranty on the frame. More at fitness installation.

Can I see the dumbbell sets first?

Yes, all sets are set up in our showroom in Ranst. You can drop in freely from Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 6:30 pm, Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm, or you can make an appointment.
