Squat rack, power cage or all-in-one: which rack do you need?

The more you want to do in a single rack, the more height, floor space, and budget you need. There are four types:

  • Half rack or squat rack (€ 745). Two uprights, open at the front, for squats, bench presses, overhead presses, and pull-ups. For example, the Martech HD3000 Half rack.
  • Power cage (€ 999 to € 2,100). Four uprights with spotter arms on both sides, allowing you to train heavy alone and safely. For example, the Martech M1 power cage.
  • Rack with cable station (€ 2,900 to € 3,999). A half rack with two weight stacks for pulldowns, rows, flys, and face pulls. For example, the Martech M8 2-in-1 Precision rack.
  • All-in-one with smith machine (€ 3,750 to € 5,999). Half rack, smith machine, and cables in a single frame, offering three machines in one. For example, the Martech M6, M10, or M14 Titan.

What should you look out for?

Ceiling height

Measure the clearance up to the lowest beam, light fixture, or garage door rail. The M6 (213 cm), M1 (213.5 cm), and HD3000 (216 cm) fit under most ceilings. The M8 is 228 or 238 cm high, the M10 is 235 cm, and the M8 Precision is also available in a lower version. If you do pull-ups, make sure to account for extra space above the bar, as your head will come up past it.

Load capacity

Look at what the J-cups and spotter arms can support, not just the steel thickness. The M8 racks are tested up to 500 kg. The HD3000 supports 300 kg on the J-cups and 400 kg on the spotter arms, and the M1 supports up to 250 kg.

Cable ratio 1:1 or 2:1

With a 1:1 ratio, you feel the exact weight of the stack. With a 2:1 ratio, the stack feels half as heavy and increases in 2.5 kg increments instead of 5 kg. A 1:1 ratio suits heavy pulldowns and rows, while a 2:1 ratio is ideal for flys and rehabilitation. The M6, M8 2.0, M10, and M14 combine both. Read more in 1:1 or 2:1: which cable ratio should you choose?

Weight and flooring

An M8 Precision weighs 375 kg, and an M10 weighs about 550 kg, excluding weight plates. Lay down a 2 cm rubber floor first, such as our Easyclean tiles starting from € 44.95 per m², and have the load-bearing capacity checked if you are installing on an upper floor.

Showroom tip: place a 220 cm barbell in the J-cups and check how much space you need on the left and right to load weight plates. You must have that total width free at home, not just the width of the rack. If you are in doubt, we can design your space in 3D for free.

Which rack for whom?

  • At home: if you train alone, choose a power cage or a rack with spotter arms. If you also want cable exercises without needing an extra machine, the M6 is the most compact all-in-one: it fits in spaces starting from 3.5 m².
  • PT studio: a rack with 1:1 and 2:1 cables, such as the M10, allows you to tailor the resistance for each client. The HD3000 is built as a commercial-grade half rack.
  • Physiotherapy practice: a 2:1 cable offers small adjustment increments, and on the M14, you can adjust the smith machine counterweight from 4.5 to 90 kg. Read how The Hinge Kine set up their practice with the M8, or view fitness equipment for physiotherapists.
  • Hotel and corporate gym: people train here without supervision, so choose spotter arms or a smith machine. See also the Martech M8 in hotels and renting and leasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a power rack and a squat rack?

A squat rack or half rack has two uprights and is open at the front. A power rack or power cage has four uprights within which you train, equipped with spotter arms on both sides. A cage provides more security when training heavy on your own.

How much ceiling height do you need for a power rack?

For the Martech M6 and M1, just over 213 cm of headroom is sufficient, while the HD3000 requires 216 cm. The M10 stands at 235 cm, and the M8 racks range from 228 to 239.9 cm. If you plan to do pull-ups, make sure to factor in extra space above the bar.

Does a power rack need to be bolted to the floor?

The Martech M8 Precision, M8 3-in-1, and M10 are freestanding and do not require anchoring, although anchoring is optional. They remain stable thanks to their weight of 375 to approximately 550 kg and their wide base.

What accessories do you need with a power rack?

At a minimum, a barbell, weight plates, and a bench. A 220 cm barbell with 107.5 kg of weight plates costs € 549.99 with tri-grip plates or € 625 with bumper plates, and a MT-HD3000 Military utility bench costs € 499. A landmine and pull-up bar are already included with most Martech racks.

What are the costs for rack installation?

Installation by our own team ranges from € 75 to approximately € 350 per piece of equipment, depending on the size. The rack is delivered in parts and assembled on-site, including the removal of packaging materials. For a complete gym setup including flooring, tracks, and mirrors, you can expect around 10 to 15% of the total investment.

What kind of warranty comes with a Martech rack?

Martech products come with a 3-year warranty and a lifetime warranty on the frame. As the exclusive distributor of Martech in the Benelux region, we keep spare parts directly in stock.

Can I test the racks beforehand?

Yes. The HD3000, M6, M8, M10, and M14 are set up in our showroom in Ranst. You are welcome to drop by from Monday to Thursday between 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM, Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, or you can schedule an appointment.
