Expandable or fixed range: which adjustable dumbbells will you choose?

All our adjustable dumbbells are PowerBlocks: you choose the weight with a magnetic selector pin and lift only the chosen plates. You can choose from three types:

  • Expandable set (€ 449 to € 569). You start with Stage 1 and build on it per kit, spreading out the investment. For example, the Elite EXP Stage 1.
  • Fixed range (€ 623). The full range right away, but cannot be expanded later. That is the Pro 50.
  • Expansion kits (€ 199 to € 229). Per pair, and only for the model they were made for. For example, the Pro 100 EXP Stage 2 kit.

What should you look out for?

The range for today and two years from now

If you are already lifting over 18 kg, you will need the Stage 2 kit right away with the Pro 100 EXP. Fully expanded, an Elite EXP costs € 847 and a Pro 100 EXP costs € 1,212, compared to € 2,350 for a rack with fixed dumbbells ranging from 5 to 40 kg.

Increment size

For shoulder and arm exercises, 2 kg per hand is already a big jump, which is why the Elite EXP, Pro 100 EXP, and Pro 50 feature 1.1 kg micro-weights.

Handle: TPR or knurled

The Elite EXP and Pro 50 feature a contoured TPR handle that feels softer during high repetition sets. The Pro 100 EXP Knurled features machined stainless steel with a diamond pattern for enhanced grip during heavy sets.

Stages and compatibility

Stages always follow in order: Stage 3 requires Stage 1 and 2, and Stage 4 of the Pro 100 EXP requires all previous stages. The Elite EXP kits are not compatible with the Elite USA.

Space

An Elite EXP block measures approx. 32 x 18 x 18 cm, and the Pro 50 measures approx. 33 x 18 cm. With a stand, you stay under one square metre, compared to 2.2 m of width for a rack with 11 pairs of fixed dumbbells.

Showroom tip: schedule a stand right away. If your blocks are on the floor, you start every set by bending down deeply. Place the stand next to your weight bench so you can select the weight without having to stand up.

Which adjustable dumbbells for whom?

  • At home: this is where they truly shine. A single pair of Elite EXP replaces 16 pairs of individual dumbbells, and the Pro 50 replaces 19.
  • PT studio: works well if you are training one client at a time. If you train with duos or small groups, you will need fixed dumbbells.
  • Physiotherapy practice: the micro-weights are useful for rehabilitation, but every patient has to learn the system. A dumbbell tower from 1 to 10 kg has every weight ready to go. Find out more about fitness equipment for physiotherapists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are adjustable dumbbells better than a regular dumbbell set?

For a home gym with limited space, usually yes, because a single pair takes up the space of an entire row of dumbbells. In a hotel or corporate gym with many changing users, it is better to choose a dumbbell set with rack.

Which PowerBlock should I choose as a beginner?

For most beginners, the Elite EXP Stage 1 is the logical starting point because you can go heavier later using expansion kits. If you never want to buy additions and 23 kg per hand is enough, the Pro 50 is a great alternative.

Are you allowed to drop adjustable dumbbells?

Better not to: place a PowerBlock down in a controlled manner after a set, either on a stand or on a rubber sports flooring.

Can I also perform kettlebell exercises with PowerBlocks?

Yes, with the Pro 100 EXP Kettlebell Handle (€ 199) you can convert a Pro 100 EXP into an adjustable kettlebell.

How are adjustable dumbbells delivered?

Free of charge within the Benelux. You have a 30-day reflection period.

What warranty do you get on PowerBlock?

PowerBlock comes with a standard 2-year warranty.

Can I test PowerBlocks first?

Yes, all PowerBlock sets are on display in our showroom in Ranst. You are welcome from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, or by appointment.
