Customer case: a pool house in Hasselt converted into a 24 m² home gym
Written by Thibaud Martens, fitness advisor at Fitnessdepot
In a poolhouse in Hasselt, we set up a home gym of approximately 24 m² featuring fixed strength stations: a half rack, a cable station, a lat pulldown and row station, a weight bench, and dumbbells. Mirrors make the space feel larger, and the windows overlooking the garden were left unobstructed. The budget indication was between € 8,000 and € 10,000, including flooring, mirrors, and installation.

What the client wanted
- Filling the space with fixed equipment rather than one large multi-functional machine.
- Minimizing adjustments between exercises: each station remains ready for use.
- Keeping the windows clear for light and views of the garden, and making the pool house feel more spacious.
Our approach
We first mapped out the space in 3D. The half rack and weight bench were positioned in front of the mirrored wall to help you monitor your technique and make the room feel deeper. The cable station and lat pulldown station are placed against the side walls. This keeps the window and sliding door wall clear, preserving the garden view.
Since the client preferred to avoid adjustments, we opted for separate stations. The lat pulldown and row station remains set up for back exercises, while the cable station is free for other cable workouts. The rower and adjustable dumbbells that were already there were given a fixed spot in the design.
From empty space to home gym
This is what the pool house looked like before the interior design.
And this is how it looks now.
The top view from the 3D design shows the layout: the area in front of the windows remains clear.
The installation
Our team laid the custom-fitted flooring, mounted the mirrors flat and securely, and installed and adjusted all the equipment. We took away the packaging waste and cleaned the space so the client could start training right away.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much space do you need for a home gym with a rack and cable station?
With approximately 24 m², you can accommodate a half rack with a bench, a cable station, a lat pulldown station, and dumbbells, while still leaving free floor space for bodyweight exercises.
Can you use a pool house or garden room as a home gym?
Yes. Rubber sports flooring protects the subfloor and dampens sound. Place the equipment against the solid walls to keep the windows clear for light and views.
Why include mirrors in a home gym?
They allow you to check your posture during squats and presses, and a mirrored wall makes a smaller space feel larger.
