Buying a weight bench: what should you look out for?
Written by Thibaud Martens, fitness advisor at Fitnessdepot
For most home gyms, an adjustable weight bench with a sturdy steel frame, a seat that adjusts along with it, and a weight capacity well above your body weight plus your weights is the best choice. This allows you to train flat, inclined, and upright, using dumbbells or with a barbell in your rack. At Fitnessdepot, an adjustable weight bench starts at € 399, and for heavier lifting, you can choose a bench with a capacity of up to 450 kg.
In this buying guide, we go through the choices just as we discuss them with customers in our showroom in Ranst: which type of bench, how much weight capacity, how stable, which adjustments, and whether the bench fits your rack and your space.
Which type of weight bench do you need?
Roughly speaking, there are three types, and the difference lies in how many angles you can train.
- Flat bench: a single fixed position. Simple and stable, but you miss out on inclined and seated exercises.
- Adjustable bench (flat and incline): the backrest adjusts from flat to upright. Ideal for bench presses, incline presses, seated shoulder presses, and dumbbell rows. This is a versatile choice for most home gyms.
- FID bench (flat, incline, decline): can also tilt downward, for decline presses and abdominal exercises with your feet secured.
Additionally, you have specialized benches for a single muscle group, such as a preacher curl bench for the biceps or a hyperextension for the lower back and glutes. These usually come later, once the basics are in place.
Load capacity: add up yourself and your weights
The load capacity is the total weight the bench safely supports: your body weight plus the barbell or dumbbells. If you weigh 90 kg and press 100 kg, there is already 190 kg on the bench when racking and un-racking, and a bar that comes down a bit too hard pushes that number even higher. Therefore, allow for a margin.
- The Martech FID2000 supports 320 kg according to the product specifications.
- The Martech MT-HD2000 supports a total of 390 kg, with a maximum user weight of 160 kg.
- The Martech MT-HD3000 Military has a load capacity of up to 450 kg.
Stability: the frame makes the difference
A bench that wobbles costs you strength and confidence. Pay attention to the thickness of the steel, the shape of the base, and the self-weight of the bench. The MT-HD2000 is built from square tubes of 75 x 75 x 2.5 mm. The MT-HD3000 features a frame made of 3 mm thick steel and weighs 49 kg itself. The FID2000 weighs 33.6 kg, making it easier to move around.
What we see during installations: a heavier bench stays in place better on a rubber sports floor, especially during heavy presses where you plant your feet firmly into the ground. A lighter bench, on the other hand, is more convenient if you frequently move it between the rack and the dumbbell rack.
Adjustment: also check the seat
The number of positions for the backrest determines how precisely you can choose the angle. At least as important is an adjustable seat: with an inclined backrest, this prevents you from sliding down during your set.
- MT-HD2000: backrest in 9 positions (0° to 90°) and a seat in 3 positions (0°, 15°, and 30°).
- MT-HD3000: backrest in 9 positions and seat in 3 positions.
- FID2000: flat, incline, and decline.
Test in the showroom how quickly you can change positions. During supersets or when training with two people, you will immediately notice whether an adjustment system works smoothly.
Cushions and upholstery
The cushion must be firm, not soft. A cushion that is too soft gives way and you lose stability under your shoulder blades. The MT-HD2000 has cushions that are 70 mm thick, and the FID2000 has a cushion of 6.5 cm. The backrest and seat of the MT-HD3000 are each 30 cm wide, featuring a grip-friendly synthetic leather upholstery that is scratch and tear resistant. A wide backrest provides support during heavy presses; those who work a lot with dumbbells sometimes deliberately choose something narrower for more freedom in the shoulders. So try lying on it before making your decision.
Does the bench fit your rack and your space?
A weight bench rarely stands alone. Think about these practical points in advance:
- Rack and bench together: check whether the bench fits between the uprights of your rack and whether your J-cups and spotter arms end up at the correct height for the bench press.
- Moving: the MT-HD2000 and the FID2000 have wheels, and the MT-HD2000 also features a carrying handle.
- Storage: the MT-HD3000 can be stored vertically, saving floor space in a small garage or basement.
- Ceiling: during a seated shoulder press with a barbell, the bar goes high above your head. Measure your ceiling, especially in a basement or under a sloping roof.
- Floor: place your bench on a rubber sports flooring. This protects your floor and dampens the noise of dumbbells placed down after your set.
Extra features: attachments and specific benches
If you want to train your legs or biceps with a single bench as well, there are versions with attachments. The MT-HD3000 Military bench + Leg attachment features a leg attachment loaded with 50 mm plates. The MT-HD3000 Military bench + Leg & Biceps attachment additionally includes a preacher curl attachment. Important: according to the product specifications, these attachments cannot be retrofitted to a standard HD3000. If in doubt, choose the version with the attachment right away.
For targeted isolation, there are separate machines: the Body-Solid GPCB329B preacher curl bench with an arm pad at a 30° angle, the Body-Solid GHYP345B 45° hyperextension for the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings, and the Marbo Lower Back Bench MP-L212 2.0 as a roman bench.
Pricing: how much does a weight bench cost?

- Around € 400: adjustable benches for home and lighter commercial use, such as the FID2000 (€ 399) and the MT-HD2000 (€ 425).
- € 500 to € 750: heavier-duty benches with a 450 kg weight capacity, such as the MT-HD3000 (€ 499) and the versions with attachments (€ 675 and € 750).

Common mistakes we see
- Bought too light. A bench that suffices at the start becomes the weak link after a year of progress. Calculate with the weight you want to press in two years.
- No adjustable seat. During incline presses, you will slowly slide down, and you will only notice this after a few weeks of training.
- Not measured with the rack. A bench that just barely fits between the uprights is an annoyance every workout.
- No flooring under the bench. Dumbbells that you drop after a heavy set leave traces on tiles and parquet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which weight bench is best for home use?
For home use, we recommend an adjustable weight bench with an adjustable seat and at least 300 kg load capacity, such as the Martech FID2000 (€ 399) or the MT-HD2000 (€ 425). If you train heavy or with multiple people, choose the MT-HD3000 with a 450 kg load capacity.
What is the difference between a flat, incline, and decline bench?
A flat bench has a single flat position, an incline bench can tilt the backrest up to upright, and a decline bench can also tilt downward. An FID bench, such as the Martech FID2000, combines all three.
How many kg should a weight bench be able to support?
Add your body weight to the weight you want to lift and leave a generous margin. For most home athletes, 320 to 390 kg is sufficient; those who lift heavy or share the bench are better off choosing 450 kg.
Can I use a weight bench in my power rack?
Yes, that is the most common combination for bench press and incline press. Just make sure the bench fits between the uprights and that you can set your J-cups and spotter arms at the correct height.
Can I add attachments later to a Martech HD3000 bench?
According to the product specifications, no: the leg and biceps attachments are only compatible with the versions that include them standard. If you ever want to use them, choose the version with the attachment right away.
